Connecting the Old-Fashioned Way

Mar 13, 2012

by Silvia Pendleton, Director of Marketing and Membership

When I first joined the TSSA staff I was tasked coordinating the luncheons.  At the time, we were hosting three luncheons on a regular basis.  Four years later, we now have seven established locations and a few that meet sporadically.  The luncheons are run by volunteers, and I’m grateful for their help - but that’s also the key to their success (in my opinion).  The luncheons have been started, and continue to take place, because a TSSA member saw a need for those involved in self-storage to connect with each other.  As the staff liaison to these volunteers, I provide assistance and send out the reminders…but they do the hard work.  They find the speakers and coordinate with sponsors and keep in touch with the members who attend the luncheons.

Sure, we’ve spread the word and called for volunteers but it still doesn’t explain the popularity of the luncheons and the interest in starting new luncheon groups.  Is it the need to connect the old-fashioned way, over a meal and face-to-face?  Even those who use technology extensively for just about everything, end up meeting in person at tweet-ups and social media clubs.

So if you’re thinking you’d like to get to know the people from the self-storage facility down the road, think about inviting them to lunch sometime.  We’ll be glad to help you start a luncheon group in your area but it doesn’t always have to be a formal affair to make a connection…or a new friend!

Be sure to check the Events / Education for the upcoming luncheon dates!
