TSSA: San Antonio Bound

Aug 03, 2012

by Silvia Pendleton, Director of Operations, Marketing & Membership

When I think about San Antonio, I think color, great food, shopping at the Mercado, music, and sipping margaritas at any of the restaurants along the Riverwalk.  Now I’m going to have to add the TSSA Annual Convention and Trade Show to my list of things I associate with one of my faorite cities!  TSSA is San Antonio-bound for this year’s convention.  You’ll hear more about the plans in the next few months, but since convention is uppermost in my mind right now, I’ve got to let you in on a few of the plans underway.

The Convention Committee has been hard at work planning for the education sessions and we hope you’ll be pleased.  We’re bringing back some of your favorites from last year:  the Best Practices Open Forum (a peer-led discussion hour); the Managers’ Idea Exchange (a great time for sharing information); and of course, the Round Table discussion groups.  But we’re also adding in a new twist.  We’re introducing the micro-session concept.

Micro-sessions are rapid “speed briefings” which give you Cliffs Notes-style overviews of trends, topics and best practices in just 20 minutes; much like the round table sessions, but in a classroom setting allowing for A/V if needed.  This format is used at many of the new media conferences such as TED* and SXSW Interactive and is being touted as the conference format of the future.

We’re also very excited about the keynote speaker.  The convention committee wanted to bring a high-profile speaker to the convention.  You’ll be hearing from Steve Ford (former President Gerald Ford’s son) as he provides highlights from his years in the White House, life with his famous father and behind-the-scenes stories from his Hollywood career.  He’s had roles in many top movies and television shows.    He’ll provide insight and inspiration for “Succeeding with Character.”

Members have told us that networking is an important part of the time spent at convention.  The committee felt strongly about providing more opportunities for members to meet, chat, and socialize.  So we’ve added an informal, relaxed afternoon at the Pearl (former site of Pearl Brewery)

The Pearl has quickly become a great place to gather, learn, shop and live.  The river boats now travel all the way to the Pearl but we’re going to make it easy by providing a shuttle to and from.  We don’t want you to be late getting back to the hotel and miss out on the charity poker tournament!

The trade show floor is going to be transformed into a market place with the colors and shopping opportunities.  You might not find Mexican blankets or cowboy boots at the trade show, but you’ll find every major self-storage supplier!  The charity live and silent auctions will cover your hankering for jewelry and leather goods, and even a chance to buy a shiny new black Jeep courtesy of Global Roofing, just to name a few items.

Registration for convention is open, and I know that you’ll want to be San Antonio bound too!  We’ll be looking for you at this fall’s premier self-storage event!

*Each year, the world's leading thinkers and doers gather for an event many describe as the highlight of their year. Attendees have called it "The ultimate brain spa" and "A 4-day journey into the future, in the company of those creating it."  Steve Jobs was a frequent presenter at TED conferences.
