No Matter How You Look at it, Community Involvement is Great

The other morning, I noticed a little gift bag by our door. Inside were some new baby outfits and accessories. Then I remembered that one of our new neighbors had just had twins. My wife had taken the time to go out and shop for the gifts, and wanted to make sure that our neighbors felt our support during this happy, but busy time.

Celebrating births dates back to humankind’s early history, and may be one of the origins of community involvement. Our very culture was founded on acts of pulling together and supporting one another: the country doctor who would treat poor patients for free; folks with vegetable gardens sharing their produce; people sheltering friends and neighbors during natural catastrophes...the list goes on and on.

Many businesses choose to act generously and get involved with their communities, and self-storage facilities are in a great position to do so. Last November, just before Thanksgiving, Self Storage Solutions of Joshua teamed up with Meals-on-Wheels of Johnson and Ellis Counties for a fresh way to raise money to stop senior hunger in the county.

Joseph Sidawi, manager of Self Storage Solutions reached out to MOW a possible fundraising activity.

“Joseph contacted us wanting information on what Meals-on-Wheels was doing here in Johnson County, and he had an idea about doing a storage unit auction as a fundraiser event to create awareness about senior hunger and raise some money for local meals,” said MOW Community Development Coordinator Lisa Hicks.

The auction resulted in more than $850 for the MOW program.

Assured Self Storage regularly shows appreciation towards Duncanville Fire & Police Departments by hosting a “a hot lunch and a smile.”  “We love doing our Police and Firemen Appreciation days.  It has truly created a bond for us with our community,” said Christine Thurston, manager for that location. Thurston also stays connected by collecting toys for the Santa Cop Program, distributing boxes for the Texas Food Bank as well as participating in gift wrapping for needy children.

These are just a few of many TSSA members that take pride and joy in community involvement. And here’s the great thing about it: not only is it a powerful means of strengthening your community ties, but has a secret payoff-you just feel good doing it.

So whether you’re involved in your community in small or large ways, it’s always a positive thing.
