Leadership: Because You Want to

May 10, 2013

If you have a high-school student involved in sports (as I do), you know that this is the time for those end-of-year banquets. I recently attended a track & cross-country banquet to honor students’ athletic and scholarly achievements.

Students were called to the front of the hall by category: freshman, junior varsity, and varsity to be recognized. Additionally, “all-star academic” awards were given out for those students maintaining a grade point average in the top of their class while also competing in track & cross country.

I knew many of the students receiving awards, and as the special awards were given out, I realized that these kids all shared a common theme: they were naturally high achievers, and many of them held down part-time jobs while not only competing athletically, but hitting high marks in pre-AP and advanced placement classes. I was looking at the future leaders of our community and beyond.

These were kids who worked hard, had a ton of energy, and still had time to contribute with activities like student council and volunteering--not because they were “supposed” to, but because they wanted to.

There are endless lists of leadership traits/qualities, but I like these top five, and I believe these kids had them:

  1. Honest
  2. Forward-Looking
  3. Competent
  4. Inspiring
  5. Intelligent

Another group which also possesses  these traits is the TSSA board of directors. These people do a terrific job of helping to guide our association, and I’d like to give them a shout out: Mark A. Skeans- Skeans & Associates, LLC ; Mike Gately -Daughtry Properties; Amy Nolan -The Storage Place; Paul Glover - Storage Choice ; Tom McCloskey -MC Self-Storage; Larry Easley - Storage Management Associates, Inc.; Jill Holbrook- Texan Self Storage; David Hunt- Owners Management Company; Ricky Jenkins -The Jenkins Organization, Inc.; Clint Wynn-Hixon Properties Inc.; Charles Plunkett- Capco Steel, Inc., and Robert Loeb - Castle Hills Self Storage, Ltd.
