Dream Big for 2014

Dec 13, 2013

by Brom Hoban, TSSA Director of Communications

Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, German author (1749-1832)

Nowhere is that statement better represented than in the actions of TSSA member Robert  M. Dominguez of Callicoatte Mini-Storage. Dominguez, who lives in Corpus Christi, managed a storage facility for four years, but always dreamed of owning his own site. While some people just dream, Dominguez took action. “I knew I wanted to own my own facility,” he told me. “So I put together a proposal for the Callicoatte site, and at the time, I met an investor named Tom Peterson. We got the package put together, presented it to the bank in 2008, and they approved the SBA loan.”

While the economy was not so hot back then, Dominguez’s timing actually has worked in his favor. “The boom came around 2012—the Eagle Ford Shale drove a lot of that,” he said. “I started renting 10-12 units daily and it just really took off.”

Dominguez’s story is inspiring to all of us, as 2014 gets underway. And in his “Maximize Your Self-Storage Investment” article in the January/February Self-Storage News, Dave Knobler of Marcus and Millichap forecasts a solid year ahead.

The entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in the self-storage industry. While REITs are the ones making the big headlines, small operators continue to flourish, and there are more opportunities out there for those willing to step up and take action.
