TSSA Advocates for Towing Bill in 86th Texas Legislative Session

Sen. Brandon Creighton (Conroe) and Rep. Joe Moody (El Paso) have filed companion bills which would allow self-storage operators to have vehicles towed when tenants stop paying storage rent. Represented by the lobbying firm Matz and Company, TSSA is advocating for the bill as a way for members to dispose of vehicles in lieu of holding a foreclosure sale.  If the bill passes as introduced, operators will be allowed to have a licensed towing company remove a vehicle when rent is unpaid, provided that the remedy is agreed to via a written rental agreement and notice is given at least 15 days before the towing occurs.

Many thanks to Sen. Creighton, who represents District 4, which includes Montgomery, Harris, Chambers, Jefferson and Galveston counties, for sponsoring SB 1185 and Rep. Moody, who represents much of El Paso County, for sponsoring HB 3530.  Creighton chairs both the Higher Education and Texas Ports-Select committees and serves on the Senate Business and Commerce, Property Tax and State Affairs committees. Moody is vice-chair of the House Calendars Committee and a member of the Business & Industry Committee, as well as Criminal Jurisprudence and Redistricting.

We have high hopes for a piece of legislation that will provide a simpler option for removing vehicles and freeing up the space for a paying customer.
